William Allan finished his Mary Queen of Scots Arriving in Leith in 1827, and it must have been well underway when Walter Scott saw it on July 12, 1826 (text from Scott’s Journal). Known earlier for his paintings of Russian life, Scott at one point helped sell one of Allan's paintings, Circassian Captives, by lottery (1815). Allan turned to Scottish historical themes after this point, some of which were influenced by Scott.
